“FIRST” Prayer and Fasting

Welcome to "FIRST"

JOIN US for a week of PRAYER and FASTING for our city, our church and our families from Monday 11th of January to Sunday 17th of January.

The New Year presents an amazing opportunity and a choice:

Do we want to move through the year relying on our strength and resources? Or, do we want to invite Jesus into our year and chose to partner with Him?

We want to invite you to partner with Jesus in 2021.

The Bible regularly talks about the idea of a “first fruits” offering. In this type of offering, the first of something is given in thankfulness to God, and in the expectation that HE will continue to provide. To start 2021, we are encouraging you set aside some time to pray and fast, giving thanks to God and trusting in His provision for the year.

Fasting.

Fasting is a practice that encourages us to disentangle with the demands, desires, pressures and pleasures of our culture. You can fast any number of things; food for a few days or a few meals, media, alcohol, etc. (Check with a doctor if you have any health conditions).

Prayer.

Day 7: Belong

17/1/2021

Day 7: Belong

Hebrew word Ger ~ refugee

Jesus commands us to love “the least of these [the ger]” (Mt. 25:40). To love the Ger is to love the stranger, immigrant, foreigner. We can all relate to difficult periods of being unnoticed, excluded or forgotten.  If we are honest, that's all of us in some way or another. Our heart as a church is to create spaces where people BELONG. We all need help expanding our hearts to love more. It is the power and presence of the Holy Spirit that helps us do this.

Reflect.

Invite the Holy Spirit to help you love more and create more spaces where people can BELONG.

Day 6: Courage

Hebrew word Chazaq ~ take heart

“In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart! I have overcome the world" John. 16:33

Jesus tells us to take heart.  In the storm seasons of life, Jesus gives hope and peace.  Chazaq is an action word in Hebrew to act courageous and urgently.  We can confidently walk in the seasons of storms, because He has overcome them.

Faith is walked out with COURAGE.

Walk in COURAGEOUS faith today.

Seize the day in COURAGEOUS faith.

Want what God wants.

Love what God loves.

Reflect.

What area do you  need to be COURAGEOUS in today? Invite God to help you.

Day 5: Questions

15/1/2021

Day 5: Questions

Hebrew word Israel ~ Wrestles with God

Genesis 32 contains an unusual story of Jacob wrestling with God. At times, all of us wrestle with God as we QUESTION life, death, failure, pain and joy. Sometimes it seems the answers are far from us and sometimes it seems the Bible is unclear and paradoxical.

“What if God placed these paradoxes within the Scriptures to cause me to struggle for the truth?  What if it is the struggle He desires as much as the truth itself?” Athol Dickson.

We are invited to wrestle with God like Jacob did with God. At the end of Jacob's wrestle, God revealed Himself to Jacob and renamed Him Israel. Don't be afraid to ask God QUESTIONS, He will reveal HImself to you.

Reflect.

Think about an area you are wrestling with and questioning. Invite the Holy Spirit into the situation and talk to God about. If you need to, reach out to a trusted godly friend and ask them to pray with you.

Day 4: Love

14/1/2021

Day 4: Love

Disciple ~ Hebrew word Talmid

Jesus calls His followers to become disciples. A disciple is an apprentice and a student. But more than that, a disciple wants to be just like Jesus, to do what Jesus did. Jesus says "everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you LOVE one another". Disciples learn to LOVE God and others the way Jesus did.  Pastor Andy Stanley says this; “your devotion to God is illustrated, demonstrated, and authenticated by your love for others”.  As disciples, we have been given the Great Commission to evangelize the world (Matt. 28:16-20).

Reflect.

Think about the call to become a disciple who learns to LOVE. What is stopping you from receiving the LOVE of God? What does LOVE require of you?

Pray.

Day 3: Devotion

13/1/2021

Day 3: Devotion

Hebrew word Shema ~ to hear and obey

The Shema is a daily Jewish prayer found in Deuteronomy 6:4-7 NIV:

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Shema implies an action, an invitation to respond.  Being a devoted Jew Jesus would have cited the prayer called the Shema in Deuteronomy 6. Fundamentally it is a prayer that acknowledges one’s allegiance and DEVOTION to a loving God. “He who has ears, let him hear’’ (Mt. 11:15,).

Reflect.

Think about the passage in Deuteronomy 6:4-7. What area of heart, soul, mind or strength is Jesus calling you to DEVOTE to Him?
